Central Iron Range Communities
Situated
along a deep vein of iron ore, the Central Iron Range
communities have long supported a mining economy. Careful reclamation of
minelands and preservation of public lands, however, have helped maintain the
region's appeal as a destination for outdoor recreation and tourism.
Manufacturing, educational institutions and medical facilities also drive the
local economy, providing diverse employment opportunities. Thriving job sectors
provide opportunity and success for those in the fields of medicine,
engineering, law, creative services and other professions. Housing is a solid
mix of single family homes spread among rural, lakeshore and urban areas,
combined with family duplexes, apartment housing and assisted living
communities. The retail landscape is a mixture of family-owned businesses,
specialty stores, chain stores and big box retailers.
Anchored by the region's largest
city, Hibbing, the Central
Iron Range
follows a major highway north and east to Chisholm, Balkan Township, Great Scott
Township, Kinney and
Buhl. This corridor is ripe for the development of industry, recreation, housing
and more.
